Elope to Virginia

You do not need to be a resident of Virginia to elope at Rock Spring

You do not need a blood test. You do not need a witness. There is NO waiting period, which means you can obtain your license and be married the same day.

Obtaining a marriage license is easy

To obtain a marriage license in Virginia, visit the clerk's office of a circuit court of any county or city in Virginia. (Rock Spring is in Essex County.) The marriage license costs $30 (cash only) and is valid for 60 days.

The clerk will give you two copies of the marriage certificate, which you MUST give to the marriage officiant PRIOR to the wedding. You also must show your state-issued identification to the officiant. The marriage officiant will complete the certificates after you have declared your intent to be married and the officiant has pronounced you married. The officiant is responsible for returning the completed certificates to the clerk within five days after the ceremony. The clerk will keep one copy and send the second copy to the State Registrar of Vital Records.

It is possible to obtain certified copies of your marriage license, if you obtain your license from Essex County and your ceremony ends at least two hours prior to the clerk's office closing for the day. The cost is 50 cents per copy.

Otherwise, you may request a certified copy of your official marriage certificate from the state registrar's office: VDH, Office of Vital Records and Health Statistics, P.O. Box 1000, Richmond, VA 23218-1000. (804) 662-6200. The cost is $12 for each copy.
